Motherhood in Margarita by Josefina Pelliza de Sagasta

Abstract

Motherhood is a controversial theme that has evolved over the centuries. In the nineteenth century, pregnancy was perceived through a scientistic and patriotic lens, and women’s national duty was promoted through the media. Artistic works consolidated the image of a faithful, protective, devoted, and submissive mother. However, this ideal was challenged by movements such as the "silent revolution." Josefina Pelliza de Sagasta employed melodrama in her novel Margarita to convey a vision of motherhood in support of the homeland, in contrast to European immigration. This article analyzes how this discourse reflects the patriarchal perspective of the period regarding pregnancy. A hermeneutic analysis was applied, based on the proposals on melodrama outlined by Peter Brooks. Thus, it becomes evident, through the characters’ actions, that motherhood acquires a positive and patriotic trait in the work of the Argentine writer.
